May Newsletter for Barnet Primary Care Training Hub

Barnet CEPN is changing name and has become a “Primary and Community Care Training Hub”.  Whilst “CEPNs” have been operating around London, the rest of the country have been operating “Training Hubs”.  Health Education England wishes to create consistency across the country and so it has been agreed that all will adopt the training hub title.

Training Hubs across the country will provide an opportunity to meet the educational needs of the multi-disciplinary primary care team, bringing together NHS organisations, community, local authority and educational establishments.

Barnet Primary and Community Care Training Hub will continue to work with colleagues in the North, Central and East London regions to:

  • Provide workforce planning, to support and understand the needs of our health and social care workforce across Barnet;
  • Develop, manage and expand opportunities for high quality clinical placements in primary care.
  • Create educational events and programmes to develop the primary and community care workforce to address local population health needs, whilst also developing the capabilities of multi-professional educators.
  • Enable, support and embed new roles within primary care, such as Physicians Associates and Trainee Nurse Associates
  • To promote careers in primary and community care to students as a future career opportunity.

At present we will be keeping our website address www.barnetcepn.org.uk

Opportunities to increase the number of Physicians Associates working in Primary Care

As a result of the current workforce crisis, HEE was set a target of 1000 physician associates working in primary care by 2020.

Primary Care Training Hubs have been asked to help promote placements for physician associates (PAs) in primary care. Barnet Training Hub has been approached by St George’s, University of London, to help facilitate host placements.  Please see the attached information including fees available to surgeries offering placements for students.

HEE is also supporting a preceptorship programme for PAs employed in primary care in the first year after gaining registration, Funding will be available for the preceptorship.
