Nursing newsletter 24th September 2021

Dear All

Hope you are all well and have been able to take advantage of the “Indian Summer” that we have been gifted.  It seems like a long time since I sent out a Newsletter as I have had some much need annual leave in the sunny Yorkshire Dales.  As you prepare for the Covid-19 Booster and Flu vaccination programme – remember that you have contributed to some of the 100 million primary care appointments during Covid. You have every right to be proud of this achievement and also to recognise that you might be in need of a bit of rest and relaxation when the opportunity arises.

Please note the new CCG switchboard number is 0203 816 3000 and update your records accordingly.

London Sample Taker Database

Please see the attached document which  contains important information for nurses and doctors who take samples as part of the NHS Cervical Screening Programme and for Practice Managers about the Cervical Screening Database (CSTD).  Urgent action is needed by all sample takers to ensure that their correct contact details and training certificates are uploaded onto the database.  Trainee sample takers are reminded that the trainee code is only viable for 9 months after taking the theoretic course and that an assessor needs to sign off competence once 20 supervised/unsupervised samples have been taken so that you can be issued with a permanent code. There have recently been a number of incidents where sample takers have not completed their training and have gone on to take samples using their trainee code.  Please remember to make sure your sample taker code is clearly written on all request forms or the sample may be reported as inadequate will need to be repeated.
Please ensure the new Nursing Associate sample takers are made aware of this information as they are due to start their course in due course.  Our external assessors are Christine Greene, Saira Saib and Tanya Brazza.

Practice Nurse Representative on Barnet LMC

Barnet LMC is due to start a new two year term from 1 September 2021.  As part of this process we need to reconfirm the Practice Nurse representative role on the LMC.

Ekene Taylor is the current GPN representative and is no longer able to continue in this role.  It is for Barnet GPN Forum to choose the next Nurse  to represent them at this important forum.  Please see attached document setting out the roles and responsibilities.  I would like one of you to nominate yourself or a nurse colleague and then the group can vote to agree the nomination.  There is a small fee paid for attending the meetings which are no more than 4 in a year.

De-escalation training -Please respond direct to ann.ayamah@lmc.org.uk

I’m sure that you are aware of the current situation of violence towards practice staff at a practice in Manchester last week.  In light of that and the issues that have happened in London, LMC would like to establish what resources/protocols/good practice/training your practice may have in place to deal with aggression towards staff that we could potentially share across London.   Alongside this,  would also like to ask what resources or training you might find useful in dealing with this, and/or any risks you may have identified that could feed into what might be offered.

Any nugget of information is welcome, but please respond direct to  ann.ayamah@lmc.org.uk
