Widening Participation

The Widening Partipation programme aims to increase awareness among school children about health and social care careers and increase working across health and social care boundaries to support the workforce of the future

In 2017 and 2018 Barnet CEPN ran a health and social care careers fair event at Middlesex University for Year 10 students and above. There were 29 health and social care related exhibitors. Students were personally invited by letter. In 2019 Barnet Training Hub held a careers fair jointly with Enfield CEPN. Around 200 students attended, giving them an idea of the broad range of health and social care careers open to them, from GP to pharmacist, to nurses and paramedics,  as well as social care and other professions..
Exhibitors to the fair included:

  • Barnet & Southgate College
  • Barnet, Enfield & Haringey Mental Health Trust
  • British Association of Social Workers (BASW)

As well as this, conversations have taken place locally to facilitate work experience placements for pupils in secondary schools in a variety of health and social care settings. Three work experience placements have taken place with commitment for a further six, and it is expected that additional opportunities will be made available before the end of the school year in July 2018.

Students from Barnet have also been invited via the CEPN to participate in training session at the Whittington Hospital. The Clinical Health Care Skills Taster Session are a chance for people to learn more about careers in health and social care and experience some of the key clinical skills including resuscitation, automated defibrillation simulator, managing blood loss and unconscious casualties.

Barnet CEPN has also participated in the NCL Traineeship programme to offer young school leavers the opportunity to work in surgeries in the borough. This is a wider regional initiative.
